In May 2023, doctors diagnosed Nancy Herting with breast cancer. That’s when she discovered a support system at Kettering Health Cancer Center. With the guidance of her oncologist, Dr. Emily Franks, Nancy felt informed as she began a treatment plan that included a mastectomy followed by four rounds of chemotherapy. Dr. Franks also introduced her to several support programs, including the Navigating Breast Cancer class, which helped answer her questions and ease her concerns. Throughout her treatment, Nancy said she felt connected to others in the class, making the Cancer Center feel like a second home.

Additionally, Nancy attended physical therapy at Maple Tree Cancer Alliance, a nonprofit partnering with Kettering Health, to help build strength for recovery. She also participated in Courageous Beauty, a class funded by the Kettering Health Foundation, which empowered her to embrace her changing appearance due to chemotherapy. This program taught her makeup skills while providing a wig from Renew Boutique and Spa. Now, cancer-free since August 2023, Nancy feels grateful for the support she received and encourages other women to prioritize their health with regular mammograms.

Why We Did It

Receiving a cancer diagnosis can be a lot to process, and many patients struggle emotionally during this time. The programs and services offered at the cancer center, such as support classes, physical therapy, and beauty programs, were designed to help patients cope with the physical toll of treatment and regain confidence. By providing a comprehensive support system, Kettering Health aims to ensure patients have the resources they need to feel supported and informed during their cancer journey.

Community Voice

“To offer these things to somebody who was already scared, not knowing where their journey was going or where their life was going, with no strings attached, was just a great feeling.”
