Trump Nominates New Director for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Yesterday, President Trump announced his new pick—Dr. Erica Schwartz—to serve as director of the CDC, seeking to install stable leadership at an agency that has faced months of internal turmoil and political controversy. Dr. Schwartz, a physician and former deputy surgeon general during Trump’s first term, brings both clinical and public health experience and is viewed as a more traditional, science-oriented choice. She also previously served as Chief Medical Officer for the U.S. Coast Guard and as Rear Admiral for the U.S. Public Health Service. Her nomination comes amid ongoing debates over vaccine policy and concerns about political influence within federal health agencies, and will require Senate confirmation before she can assume the role.
