Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center has expanded its spaces for treating mental health emergencies by constructing a new six-story patient care tower and renovating existing facilities. The new tower will improve the hospital’s spaces for essential mental health services, and initial services in the building will be online by the end of 2025. Among the new features is a redesigned Emergency Department specifically tailored to improve care and enhance privacy for mental health patients. The expansion complements the hospital’s existing comprehensive mental health treatment options, such as inpatient and outpatient services, as well as partial hospitalization programs. Nearly $15 million in charitable gifts have helped to fund the tower construction. Among them, the Lee family of Potomac supported the project with a $1 million donation, their largest contribution to a Washington, D.C. area organization, in gratitude for a family member’s care.
Why We Did It
This project addresses the growing demand for mental health services in Montgomery County and surrounding areas, where Shady Grove Medical Center plays an important role as Maryland's second-largest provider of mental health care. The hospital has seen a rise in individuals seeking mental health services, both voluntarily and involuntarily. The tower's new design aims to enhance the quality of care, in part by fostering a more therapeutic environment. Shady Grove’s mental health services also include assisted living and education programs for all ages. Notably, it is the only hospital in Montgomery County to earn The Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval for Behavioral Health Care, highlighting its high-quality care standards.
