AdventHealth’s decade-long partnership with the city of Altamonte Springs is helping inspire the next generation of STEM leaders through the Altamonte Springs Science Incubator (AS2I) program. This program, which was launched in 2018, began as a small field trip program aimed at creating interest in the fields of science, technology, math and engineering. Now the program offers internships for college and high school students, scholarships for high school seniors and educational experiences. To date, AdventHealth has hosted over 1,800 STEM field trip experiences and has seen a 70% increase in intern participation as the program expanded into new schools and community events. The internship program allows students to rotate through various departments within the City of Altamonte Springs, allowing them to gain organizational knowledge and develop professional and practical skills in STEM and business-related fields. Thanks to the partnership between AdventHealth and the City of Altamonte Springs, over 90 internships have been offered.
Why We Did It
By investing in education and workforce development, AdventHealth recognizes that economic opportunity and personal growth are essential to healthy communities. Through AdventHealth’s partnership with the city of Altamonte Springs, students on field trips participate in hands-on experimentation and data collection, interact with scientists and park rangers, and participate in discussions and career opportunity sessions. Interns also get the opportunity to shadow and work with City professionals, while they explore disciplines such as strategic communication, information technology, code enforcement, executive administration, growth management, human resources, engineering, water conservation, wastewater management and more. This investment in STEM education will provide countless professional experiences for future students.
