RNC Recap: Meet JD
Last week, President Trump announced during the kickoff of the Republican National Convention (RNC) that Ohio Senator JD Vance, will be his running mate for the 2024 election. While health care issues were not widely discussed, President Trump signaled his intent to protect Medicare and find cures for Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. Senator Vance, who has been in Congress for less than two years, has taken health care positions that both toe and buck the party line.
What We Know About JD’s Health Care Policies
Vance once opposed the repeal of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), believing it would leave many Americans uninsured and lacking adequate access to health care. Lowering drug costs has also been an area of interest.
A Behavioral Health Champion
Vance has stressed the importance of mitigating the opioid epidemic; this is a significant issue of his platform because he’s had family members with a substance use problems. To address this issue, he started a nonprofit organization that focuses on addressing the opioid epidemic and he supported legislation to impose sanctions on fentanyl traffickers.
