A key initiative of AdventHealth’s response to the 2022 White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health is the Renewed Hope Food Bus. This mobile resource delivers healthy food and nutrition education across Kansas City, promoting long-term health through fresh produce and healthy eating habits.
In response to the conference, AdventHealth developed strategies to support food-insecure individuals, increase access to nutritious foods, and improve community-based nutrition education. AdventHealth Shawnee Mission has participated in The Hope Bus efforts since 2022, primarily serving suburban and urban communities.
To build upon this impact, the South Overland Park campus was established to reach suburban and rural populations in surrounding areas such as Paola, Spring Hill, and Stanley. June 4th, 2025, will be South Overland’s first day hosting The Hope Bus. Together, these campuses strengthen AdventHealth’s ability to deliver accessible, community-focused care in health and nutrition. In celebration of National Nutrition Month 2025, AdventHealth continues to further community well-being by addressing the link between negative health outcomes and poor nutrition.
Why we did it
Nutrition and health challenges in local communities require a proactive response through programs that directly address food access and education. AdventHealth’s work is motivated by the understanding that proper nutrition can prevent chronic diseases and improve overall community well-being. Establishing a presence closer to smaller communities, AdventHealth is reducing barriers to access that are often due to transportation limitations and distance. Adding the South Overland Park campus was a key step in expanding this mission. By reducing transportation barriers and bringing services closer to where people live, the South Overland Park campus provides equitable access to the same resources available at Shawnee Mission, all without having to travel approximately 15 miles each way.
