The Street Medicine initiative, run by Loma Linda University Health, is a student-led volunteer group that provides critical healthcare services to unhoused individuals across San Bernardino. The project aims to reach people who are either unable or unlikely to seek medical care on their own, offering services such as medical checkups, vaccinations, drug counseling, and health screenings at various community locations. Outreach events are conducted 1-3 times per week under the supervision of LLUH providers and pharmacists, ensuring consistent, high-quality care.

Why We Did It

San Bernardino’s unhoused population faces barriers to healthcare, from lack of access to distrust of medical institutions. Loma Linda launched the Street Medicine initiative to bridge this gap by bringing healthcare directly to people in need. The goal is to improve health outcomes, reduce preventable hospitalizations, and build trust within communities.

Community Voice

“Through this experience, I’ve realized that the homeless individuals I meet in the small corners of San Bernardino and Riverside are no different from those I hope to serve one day in remote parts of Africa. These interactions go beyond sharing medical knowledge or skills; they allow me to build relationships, offer hope, and consider what it truly means to show compassion and honor the dignity in every human life. I am profoundly grateful for this opportunity, which continually reminds me of the purpose guiding each step of my journey." – said Younghyun (Neo) Seo
