The Midway-Canaan community was established in the 1920s and remains a predominantly African American neighborhood. With the support of AdventHealth, the Midway Coalition, a nonprofit organization, focuses on improving infrastructure, advocating for economic and educational advancement, and preserving the community’s historical significance. Since its formal establishment in 2021, the Midway Coalition has led efforts to improve the quality of life for local residents by advocating for and securing infrastructure investments, including $10 million for stormwater infrastructure from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), as well as advancing community health initiatives.

Why We Did It

Due to its location and outdated infrastructure, the Midway-Canaan community faces economic challenges and environmental risks, such as flooding. As new development increases the pressure on local resources, the need for better infrastructure and health services becomes evident. The community’s reliance on septic systems presents environmental risks, and poor stormwater management adds to these issues. The project aimed to secure long-term solutions for stormwater infrastructure improvements, health services, and economic development, all while preserving the cultural heritage of this historic community.
