During a severe January 2025 winter storm, AdventHealth Mid-America teams worked together to ensure patient care continued without disruption. Dangerous road conditions made travel difficult, but staff, leaders and support teams stepped up to keep hospitals safely staffed, with more than 200 employees staying overnight. While winter weather in January 2026 created some travel challenges, the impact was minimal in comparison, requiring only limited overnight accommodations and a small number of staff rides to maintain care continuity.

Why We Did It

Severe weather created unsafe travel conditions that threatened staff availability and continuity of care. To remove barriers and protect employees, AdventHealth coordinated transportation for more than 100 team members and provided overnight accommodations. Community volunteer groups provided an extension of AdventHealth’s outreach by assisting patients when they needed transportation the most, including safely delivering an expecting mother and father to the AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Birth Center as the mother went into labor. These actions ensured patient care remained uninterrupted while ensuring employee safety and well-being.

In contrast, January’s weather of the following year (2026) caused only minor disruptions. AdventHealth provided overnight accommodations and rides for staff, ensuring continued care, despite less severe weather impacts from the previous year.

"We're just grateful that they were able to come and be a major part of this event in our lives and get us here safely and happily. We should always be willing to help people in need. Never be afraid to stick your neck out there.”
