In 2023, Adventist Health launched the Preceptor Virtual Academy to provide experienced clinicians, like nurses, respiratory therapists, and other care team members, with the skills to support and coach new staff as they enter clinical roles. The program has prepared more than 1,900 preceptors and gives participants online access to leadership development resources and the HealthStream Unlimited Continuing Education Center. Through this training, residents take part in hands-on learning that improves their clinical judgment and ability to deliver patient-centered care. The Academy also offers a range of specialty rotations, including pharmacy administration, critical care, cardiology, infectious disease and antimicrobial stewardship, internal medicine, ambulatory care, orientation and longitudinal staffing, and NICU/pediatrics.

Why We Did It

This effort was created to give new clinicians stronger support and ensure consistent, high-quality care. Many new team members start their roles needing clear guidance and structured learning to build confidence and grow their clinical skills. At the same time, healthcare organizations continue to face workforce shortages and challenges in preparing new staff for complex care environments. By expanding preceptor training and making it available virtually, Adventist Health aims to streamline onboarding, close skill gaps and invest in the long-term success of its clinical workforce.

Community Voice
