In January 2025, AdventHealth Tampa expanded its OB/GYN Residency program by opening a 5,000 square foot teaching facility on its Bruce B. Downs Boulevard hospital campus in Tampa, Florida. The clinic, supporting three residents currently, will develop a maximum of 12 residents in a four-year, hands-on training program. With eight exam rooms that support routine obstetrics and gynecology imaging, in-office services, and fetal monitoring, the clinic staff can care for 10 to 20 patients a day. This clinic will widen access to basic OB/GYN care in Tampa Bay while attracting top talent and making way for physicians to continue practicing locally, following their residency program. AdventHealth Tampa commits to reducing the physician shortage with the goal of training more than 100 residents by 2028 across all its residency programs.

Why We Did It

The United States is projected to have a physician shortage of up to 139,000 doctors by 2033, according to the American Association of Medical Colleges. To bridge that gap in Florida, AdventHealth opened a new OB/GYN residency clinic to support recent medical school graduates in developing their expertise in a real-world setting. Starting an OB/GYN residency program in Tampa addresses issues like health equity and maternal mortality by expanding access to healthcare for women in the area. By 2028, AdventHealth Tampa will expand to train more than 100 residents across all programs, solidifying its position as a premier teaching hospital.
