The AdventHealth Food is Health® Program addresses the nutritional needs of individuals in designated “food deserts” in Florida through partnerships with local organizations, including the University of Florida and Dube’s Mobile Market. In 2023, the program distributed 44,779 pounds of fresh produce and provided 40 health and nutrition education class series to 948 participants across 33 sites in 7 counties. The initiative also engaged 140 youth participants through classes in local schools and summer camps to improve food security and promote healthier lifestyles for families facing transportation and economic challenges.
Why we did it
The program aims to alleviate food insecurity and improve health outcomes for individuals and families facing transportation barriers and economic challenges. In 2022, only 10-33% of the population lived within half a mile of a healthy food source, and food insecurity rates ranged from 10-14% (FLCharts). The program seeks to promote healthier lifestyles and prevent chronic diseases by providing essential resources.
