Description

The Daytona Beach Navy Week 2024 project aimed to raise community awareness of health services and resources for underserved populations, especially families. It sought to increase social support and improve health outcomes through various outreach activities. Partnering with the U.S. Navy, the initiative included two community events during Black History Month, where 60 sailors engaged with youth and families at local schools and Boys & Girls Clubs, along with a performance by the Navy Brass Quintet at AdventHealth hospitals. Additional milestones included Rear Admiral Ruttenberg swearing in a Boys & Girls Club member and the distribution of 105 food packages to families in need.

Why we did it

The project addressed the identified issue of low community awareness regarding available services and resources. Many residents, particularly in priority populations, relied on word-of-mouth communication to learn about health services. This often led to gaps in knowledge and access to necessary care. By engaging the community through partnerships, like the U.S. Navy, the initiative aimed to enhance health literacy and support vulnerable groups more effectively.
