The 2020 Community Education Program supported children in the Los Angeles area by addressing their back-to-school needs. This initiative partnered with the YMCA and the Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council to organize a back-to-school celebration, where local organizations distributed over 5,000 backpacks filled with essential school supplies to children. The event fostered community involvement by encouraging local donations and providing health supplies like masks and hand soap to address safety concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Why We Did It

The program sought to reduce families’ stress regarding back-to-school preparations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many families in the community struggled with financial burdens and lacked access to essential school supplies. Adventist Health supported educational needs by distributing backpacks and positively impacting the local community.

Community Voice

“The community is very grateful. You can see it by being here an hour early before we actually started giving [the backpacks] out. There was a line of people standing, even in their cars, waiting.”
