Last week, the Biden Administration updated its standards for federal agencies to collect race and ethnicity data. According to Directive 15 (SPD 15), federal agencies have until March 28, 2029, to comply with the updated standards and must submit action plans to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) on how they will comply with the requirements by September 28, 2025. Among other changes, the revised SPD 15 requires that race and ethnicity be collected using a single question with multiple responses, instead of the previous requirement to collect Hispanic ethnicity as a separate question. The OMB also added Middle Eastern or North African (MENA) as a new minimum category. For a summary of the updates, click here.
