For a child facing surgery, having access to advanced care can make all the difference. To meet the needs of pediatric patients, Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital (LLUCH) modernized its operating rooms, expanding its capacity to provide surgical care for more children. The new operating space opened in January 2026 in the South Unit, while the North Unit was reconfigured to increase outpatient surgery capacity and improve patient flow.    Together, the changes allow LLUCH to care for about 250 additional pediatric patients each year. The modernization was one of six projects made possible by a $135 million grant from the California Health Facilities Financing Authority (CHFFA).

Why We Did It

To enhance surgical capabilities and improve patient flow, LLUCH modernized its more than 30-year-old operating rooms. Designed with an “Under the Sea” theme, the new spaces create a calming and imaginative environment while supporting child-centered care for patients and their families.    By reducing cleaning times and optimizing workflows, the renovation also increases surgical capacity, allowing more young patients to receive the care and support they need throughout their recovery.
