Primary elections have now concluded across all AHPA states, with Wisconsin and Florida holding their contests on August 11th and August 18th, respectively. Several races highlighted the continuing ideological contest within the Democratic Party. In Wisconsin, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley narrowly defeated Democratic Socialist-aligned State Representative Francesca Hong by just one percentage point, underscoring the competitiveness of the party’s internal divide. Similar dynamics emerged in Colorado, where Democratic Socialist Melat Kiros defeated 15-term U.S. Representative Diana DeGette. 

Florida’s Senate primary offered perhaps the clearest example of these tensions. In a notable upset, State Representative and self-described Democratic Socialist Angie Nixon defeated retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman, who gained national prominence for his 2019 congressional testimony. Nixon’s victory reflects the growing influence of the party’s left flank at a time when Democratic leaders continue to debate ideological direction. In the governor’s race, Trump-endorsed Congressman Byron Donalds captured the Republican nomination and will face Democratic nominee and former Republican David Jolly.
