As the nation continues to grapple with an epidemic of violence against health care workers, state policymakers are increasing their efforts to reduce violence and protect providers. In 2021–2022, health care workers experienced 14 nonfatal injuries per 10,000 full-time employees, more than triple the rate for all industries combined. Common policies being pursued include expanding the consequences for assault, adding reporting requirements of incidents, requiring that hospitals have workplace violence plans and staff trainings, and the integration of law enforcement into health care facilities. Some states have limited the scope of their policies, such as limiting penalties to incidents happening in emergency departments.
