Serving Oregon’s Migrant Community (SOMOS) is a program by Adventist Health Columbia Gorge, focused on providing healthcare services to migrant workers who come to the region for the cherry harvest each summer. Through partnerships with local orchards and community health organizations, SOMOS offers vital health screenings, including blood pressure checks, glucose testing, and vaccinations. The program also distributes food and hygiene kits and hosts engaging activities, turning health check-ups into welcoming community events. SOMOS operates three times each summer. The program aims to extend its reach beyond the cherry season to offer continuous care for migrant families year-round.

Why We Did It

Adventist Health created SOMOS to address the healthcare needs of migrant workers, a population that often lacks access to regular medical care due to the transient nature of their work. By providing quick, essential health services, SOMOS aims to prevent serious health issues from going untreated, ensuring that workers can continue their vital contributions to the local economy while maintaining their health.

“My dad is a farmworker and has been his entire life, and he migrated when he was younger to different locations. When we offer these services, I think about my dad and how crucial and essential the health of farmworkers is.”
